In form galloper Westriver Kevydonn gained an automatic start in next Saturday’s Group 1 Carlton Draught Railway Stakes (1600m) by winning in the $125,000 RJ Peters Stakes (1500m) at Ascot yesterday.

Heavily backed from $4.20 to $3 favouritism, the son of Danetime led throughout earning an exemption from the Railway ballot.

Westriver Kevydonn is going into his first Group 1 in fine form having won is past three starts.

Yesterday was his first attempt at black-type and he had enough to win and be the first Railway Stakes starter for 26-year-old trainer Paige Kenney and country owner Ted Hill.

“It’s exciting for me to have a runner in the Railway,” Kenney said.

“He’s improving all the time.”

The six-year-old, held off the fast-finishing Tranquility by a short head with Grey Monarch third.

“Unbelivable, Im am stuck for words, this is a dream come true,” Hill said.

“For some one from the bush that nobody ever heres of, to breed a little horse out there and come and mix it with the best, I am 10 foot tall and bullet proof.”

Tabsportsbet have Westriver Kevydonn a $12 chance and Tranqulity $18 for the Railway Stakes with Ranger the $3.20 favourite.

Kenney, who trains about dozen horses, is hoping for a good barrier come Tuesdsay thus giving her front runner every possibility.

The Fred Kersley trained Grand Nirvana is nominated in both the Railway and 1200m Winterbottom Stakes but it is the latter where he will run.

Kersley made the decision this morning – bookmakers have the gelding at $12 in both races.

Waratahs Secret, an $8 in the Winterbottom, is expected to miss that race and run in the Railway where he is presently a $21 chance.

Scenic Blast is still in Winterbottom betting but has been sent for a spell.
