Kerrin McEvoy is hoping to take out the grand slam of Australian racing with a win in the Cox Plate

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy is looking to be the eighth jockey in history to complete the grand slam of Australian racing by winning the $3 million Cox Plate aboard Helmet this Saturday.

McEvoy won the prestigious Melbourne Cup in 2000 on Brew at the age of 20, just days after completing his jockey apprenticeship.

Eight years later, McEvoy won the Caulfield Cup aboard All The Good before going on to win the $2.5 million Golden Slipper with Sepoy earlier this year.

A win from Helmet in this weekend’s Cox Plate would give McEvoy what just seven other jockeys have achieved; the grand slam of Australian racing.

“It would be a fantastic thrill,” McEvoy said.

“I’ve never been so excited and looking forward to a race as much as I am on Saturday.

“To win the top four races in Australia would be a dream come true, so let’s see if we can do it.”

The jockey is confident of Helmet’s winning chances going into the race, and is unfazed by the wide barrier they have drawn.

“We don’t have to lead by any means,” he said.

“It just depends what happens once the barriers open and what the boys do inside me.

“Obviously I’ve got to keep in mind that it is 2040 metres and last start (when he won the Caulfield Guineas) was a mile (1600m) so I have to ride him accordingly.”

Helmet is looking to win his seventh race from just ten starts when he lines up for Saturday’s big race.
