Kent aiming for back to back Ballarat Cups

Domesky is one of two runners in the Ballarat Cup for trainer Michael Kent

Cranbourne trainer Michael Kent is aiming for back to back wins in the $150,000 Ballarat Cup(2200m) on Sunday.

Kent, who won the 2010 Cup with My Bentley, runs Domesky and Red Buttons in the Listed event.

Domesky returned to something like his best with a closing second to Musical Hit  in the $100,000 Antler Luggage Handicap (2000m)  at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day.

It came after being freshened when 16th in the Caulfield Cup behind Southern Speed.

“He’s had an indifferent campaign,” Kent said.

“He ran really well first up, ran good second up, was a bit unlucky at the Valley then had no luck at all at Cranbourne, he ran awful in the Caulfield Cup and we freshened him up and he ran well again.

“He’s better with his races spaced so after the Caulfield Cup we thought we’d target this race.

“He’s an interesting horse, he’s got ability, he always gets back and looks unlucky but I am pleased with his condition, he looks well.”

Domesky, whose two wins are a Mornington maiden and the Group 2 2011 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley , will start from barrier six in a Ballarat Cup that has attracted a field of 17 and will be run at 4.12pm EST.

He will be ridden by Brad Rawiller.

Red Buttons will start from barrier three with Dean Yendall in the saddle.

Kent said the seven-year-old had excuses last time out, when an eight-length sixth in the Kyneton Cup behind Lucky Eighty Eight.

“He ran well at Cranbourne in the Moe Cup that wasn’t the Moe Cup and then at Kyneton the track was off on the fence a bit that day and he just got too far back,” Kent said.

“The one thing I’ll say about him is he’s been carrying a lot of weight and he’s getting some nice weight off.

“He’s working well and he looks terrific.”
