Karuta Queen will resume for the spring in the San Domenico Stakes

Karuta Queen will make her first appearance as a three-year-old when she runs in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday.

The Magic Millions winner is ready for a return after taking a much needed spell following her tenth place finish in the $3.5 million Golden Slipper in April.

Trainer Neville Layt believes that Karuta Queen is primed for her first-up assignment this weekend.

“If she goes like she’s been going it’s going to take a pretty smart one to beat her,” Layt said.

“She’s low-flying like she was when she was an early two-year-old. She’s back better than ever.”

The Not A Single Doubt filly burst onto the scene as a two-year-old when she won both the $200,000 Wyong Classic and the $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions.

The filly has had two barrier trials since her recent spell, winning both by a combined margin of 18 lengths.

“She’s done a treat and is right on the ball,” Layt said of his stable star.

“She’s had two trials, she’s had plenty of work since the last trial (on July 22) and she’s just going along great guns.

“She’ll have a gallop on Tuesday morning on the course proper here (at Queanbeyan) and that will be her final workout before the race.”

Layt is hopeful that Karuta Queen will play a big role in some of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival’s top feature races.

Prior to that the filly is scheduled to run in the Group 3 Run To The Rose and the Listed Heritage Stakes in Sydney.

“She’ll then go down to Melbourne for a couple of races later in the carnival,” Layt said.

The trainer is thankful for the absence of Golden Slipper winner Sepoy, who is running in the Vain Stakes at Caulfield this weekend.

“And I don’t have to meet Sepoy this time (in the San Domenico),” Layt said.

“That’s the good part about it.”
