It’s hard to imagine how there possibly could have been a better outcome for Karuta Queen during the first trial of her campaign yesterday in Canberra.

The lightning quick filly blitzed the 900m barrier trial to put more than 17 lengths between her and the second placed horse.

While the competition was nothing like what she’ll face throughout the autumn the manner of her performance drew the attention of many people.

Karuta Queen won the 2010 Magic Millions Classic and rose to new heights in the spring competing in open grade and even running second to Black Caviar.

Her time yesterday was 50.64 seconds with the final 600m covered in 33.33.

To put that into perspective she ran the same 900m trial in February last year in a time almost a second slower.

She could have gone even quicker as well with rider Adrian Layt barely moving throughout the journey, simply letting her click through the gears on her own.

The original plan from trainer Neville Layt was to give her one more trial but such was the performance she’ll now start in a 1000m open handicap at Warwick Farm on February 4th.

From there she’ll move onto the 1200m Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes where her autumn will really heat up.

It will be interesting to see how she stacks up against her own sex and age given she hasn’t faced many of them since they were two year olds.
