Gai Waterhouse will make a belated entrance into the Brisbane Winter Carnival this weekend

Gai Waterhouse will make a belated entrance into the Brisbane Winter Carnival this weekend when two of her stable take to the Eagle Farm surface.

They will be spread across two of the feature events with Charing Cross to run in the Queensland Derby and Tullamore to contest the Brisbane Cup.

They are both being floated up today however Waterhouse will not be making the trip with them.

She’s heading off to Sicily to celebrate the wedding of her son Thomas to Hoda Vakili in a couple of weeks time.

Charing Cross is coming off a third in his last run at Randwick while Tullamore contested a very interesting Winter Cup on the weekend at Rosehill where he fell short to Legsman.

Nash Rawiller will ride Charing Cross in the Derby with local jockey Chris Munce picking up Tullamore in the Brisbane Cup.

Waterhouse is hoping the experience of Munce around Eagle Farm will be enough to extract that little bit extra out of him across the trip.

“Tullamore has been making steady progress and Chris Munce’s local knowledge will be a big asset,” Waterhouse said.

“He had every chance in the Winter Cup but I feel he’s earned his spot in the Brisbane Cup.

“The penny has only just dropped with him.”

It’s a race Munce has had success with as recently as last year when he won with Crossthestart.

Previous to that he won the 1995 and 1997 Brisbane Cup’s with Desert Chill.as well as claiming his first back in 1992 with Grooming.

Far from seeing the one week turnaround as a negative Waterhouse is confident it will only work in his favour.

“We found backing him up was the key to him,” she said.

“He ran second at Gosford in March and we backed him up five days later to win on the Kensington track (at Randwick).”

Tullamore has won four races in his 18 start career while Charing Cross goes into the Derby with just two wins from nine starts.

Waterhouse says he’s done enough in the lower classes to justify a start against the Brisbane field.

“He’s come a long way and he won well on the Kensington track before finishing third on a heavy track at Randwick last start,” she said.
