Unbeaten three-year-old Johannapine will not continue on to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival after failing to produce her quick turn of foot when racing at Sandown yesterday.

The Johannesburg filly still managed to claim a narrow win in the event, however, it was far from her eight length victory she posted on debut.

Johannapine won her first start in the Whitehead Timber Sales Maiden for fillies and mares at Ballarat on June 5, ahead of place-getters Sugar Lips and Profit Margin.

Trainer Mark Webb believes the filly has come to the end of her campaign.

“Her win at Ballarat was impressive but I half-suspected she had nearly had enough during the week and told the owners I wouldn’t be surprised if she had trained off a whisker,” Webb said.

“She’s got a heap of speed and has a good turn of foot but probably didn’t show that as much today.”

Johannapine won yesterday’s D’Urban Handicap for fillies in a photo finish ahead of second place-getter Invincible Jess and third place-finisher Allegretto.

“She has done a lot wrong and is very green and will probably go to the paddock now,” Webb said.

“We have given her time and she will improve again from the break.”

Johannapine will go to the paddock with two unbeaten wins to her name and prize money of nearly $30,000.

The filly will most likely return after the spring carnival, with Webb hopeful she will have a successful campaign in next year’s autumn.
