Jimmy not Able in Hong Kong Mile

Able One

Able One (inside) has won the Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin

The long spring campaign of Jimmy Choux came to an unsuccessful end when local bolter Able One scored in the $2.5m Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m) at Sha Tintoday.

The Kiwi galloper had been up since August and racing in a third country but still looked a winning chance at the home turn.

The son of Thorn Park hadn’t enjoyed his new surrounding when he arrived in Hong Kong but had picked up in the last week.

But at this top level, any given advantage is too much and he faded to finish eighth.

Able One, trained by Aussie ex-pat John Moore started a $66 chance in Hong Kong and paid big dividends around Australia.

Able One was a late scratching from last year’s Mile when jockey Darren Beadman reported that he was short in his action at the starting gates.

The vets found him to be lame and withdrew the galloper.

He then failed to win in six starts since and went to the gate this year dismissed of having any hope.

Ageing South African hoop Jeff Lloyd was given the mount, he had only ridden five winners in Hong Kong season.

But no one should have pensioned off either horse or jockey.

Olivier Doleuze set a cracking speed on Flying Blue leading for much of the race by four to five lengths.

Able One settled a clear second with Beauty Flash ahead of Jimmy Choux (fourth) enjoying a good rails run.

Able One took over at the 330m mark and kicked clear of Jimmy Choux, Sichuan Success and Beauty Flash chasing.

But it was left to Cityscape, Xtension and Dubawi Gold to pose any threat.

They always looked like they wouldn’t get there and at the end didn’t

Moore’s more fancied runner Xtension was unlucky when blocked for a run until the 200m mark.

Cityscape came from well back to be beaten a neck for second just ahead of Xtension who drove late and Dubawi Gold who ran on in similar fashion to Cityscape always a half length adrift.

Able One a son of Cape Cross raced in Australia in his early days when trained by Grahame Begg.
