Imported stayer Jet Away will begin his 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 7.

The Cape Cross entire stamped himself as a possible Caulfield Cup (2400m) or Cox Plate (2040m) contender with two impressive performances earlier this year, in his first campaign since joining the stable of David Hayes.

Jet Away flashed home late to win the Yalumba Golden Mile (1600m) at Bendigo in his Australian racing debut before winning the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield a fortnight later with another strong finishing burst.

Hayes was delighted with Jet Away’s autumn campaign and told News Limited he believes the horse is good enough to win both the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.

“I think the weight-for-age fields are falling away a bit and the distance won’t worry him at all,” Hayes said.

“I actually think he can be a weight-for-age horse, although he was bought specifically to win the Caulfield Cup.”

Jet Away is another European import who has thrived in Australian conditions after failing to set the world on fire overseas.

His biggest win in the United Kingdom came in the Listed 32Red Festival Stakes (1986m) at Goodwood last year, where he beat 2012 Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente, but he generally failed to fire when stepped up too Group level.

The striking gelding is expected to get his first taste of the Flemington straight in the next month with Hayes hoping to give him a hit out at the track before he runs first-up.

Hayes is chasing his third win in both the Caulfield Cup and the Cox Plate, after winning the Caulfield Cup with Fraar (1993) and Tawqeet (2006) and the Cox Plate with Better Loosen Up (1990) and Fields Of Omagh (2006).
