Jazz Song lived up to her dashing midweek track work to score an upset win in the Group 3 $120,000 Simpson Construction Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
Winning jockey Craig Newitt had to convince trainer Mick Price to run the well-bred Fastnet Rock filly following an impressive gallop at Caulfield on Tuesday morning and the $51 chance raced right up to his expectations.
“She worked super on Tuesday and I said to Mick that it was worth putting her in here because if she could snag a place it would be great for her value.” Newitt said.
“I had to convince Mick to run her.”
“He wanted to go to Sandown next week for the softer option just to make sure she kept winning.
“But I just said to him when the race came up a bit small to throw her in and if she draws a gate we might be able to sneak a bit of Black Type with her.”
Newitt was able settle Jazz Song on the fence just worse than midfield and with plenty of pressure on up front was able to storm home late and swamp the leaders close to the finish.
After being slightly slow at the start from the inside gate, Luke Nolen was able to push favourite Miss Promiscuity ($2.10) to the front but was never given any peace with Damian Browne on the Peter Snowden filly Montsegur making a move coming to the home turn.
But Nolen was able to sneak away at the top of the straight and looked to have the race won until Newitt got into the clear an gave Jazz Song a clean run to the line to score by almost half a length.
West Australian filly Miss Rose De Lago ran a good race at her first start in Melbourne start to hold on for third ($3.80).
Jazz Song was only having her third race start and was sent out at the long odds of $51 coming off a midweek seventh over 1440m at Caulfield on December 11, but stable representative Rory Hunter could find plenty of excuses for that day and wasn’t surprised by the win.
“Her maiden win at Wangaratta was good and she didn’t handle the wet when she got beaten at Caulfield. She’s always looked like being a handy filly.” Hunter said.
Newitt and Price will be hoping their luck continues today at Caulfield when they team up again with favourite Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 $400,000 Sportingbet Oakleigh Plate (1100m).
