Jameka Far From Her Peak In Atlantic Jewel Stakes

Jameka will start her spring campaign in the 2015 Atlantic Jewel Stakes and trainer Ciaron Maher has revealed that the promising filly will be far from peak fitness in the Listed event at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Jameka had no luck whatsoever in the first three race starts of her racing career, but she broke through for a maiden race win when she took out the Group 2 VRC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on March 14.

Maher is happy with the way that Jameka has come up for her 2015 Spring Racing Carnival campaign, but he told RSN that the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) will be the major spring goal for the daughter of Myboycharlie and he expects the three-year-old to take plenty of benefit out of the Atlantic Jewel Stakes this weekend.

“She has up pretty well,” Maher said.

“She is not fully wound up for tomorrow and it is our aim to have her hitting her peak in the Thousand Guineas.

“She is a very big striding horse and she is going to have to back from a widish barrier, so I would just look for her to be finishing off.

“She has come up well, but I think that she will still take a fair bit of benefit from the run.

“The race doesn’t look like it is really going to map well for her, but it is just a nice race to kick her off in.”

While Maher does not rate the winning chances of Jameka in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes, he is happy with the physical condition of the filly and he is confident that racegoers will be impressed by the sight of the promising galloper in the mounting yard this weekend.

“She was quite a big imposing two-year-old and she has furnished a little bit,” Maher said.

“She has come on a bit, but she was quite an imposing horse to bring with and she didn’t really have to.

“She has spelled well, she has come up well and I am very happy with her.”

Jameka is currently available at 2015 Atlantic Jewel Stakes odds of $10 with Ladbrokes, while Champagne Stakes winner Pasadena Girl ($4.40) is a narrow favourite from Lindsay Park-trained Stay With Me ($4.60), last start winner Badawiya ($7.50), JJ Atkins placegetter Sagaronne ($10), Robbie Griffiths-trained Don’t Doubt Marley ($10) and the resuming Sweet Redemption ($10).
