J.J. Atkins favourite Brazen Beau has all the right credentials to run the 1600m of the two year old Group 1 at Eagle Farm on Saturday according to his trainer Chris Waller.

All the two year olds in the $500,000 Tatts Group J.J. Atkins (1600m) except Careless are stepping up to the 1600m for the first time but Waller has no concerns about Brazen Beau  who has had the right preparation.

“He’s pretty straight forward, he is improving through each run and his fitness levels should be where they need to be for a mile race,” Waller told the Sportsman.

“It’s seems pretty hard to muck up.”

“You have a nice stream of races, you need a horse peaking and he has been specifically set for this race so that is all we could do.”

And even though Waller thinks the I Am Invincible colt will handle the step up in distance, he knows the only way to find out is to put him to the test.

“There is no reason to say he won’t get it and no reason to say he won’t improve over a mile,” Waller said.

“We just hope for a bit of luck on race day and that the horse is good enough.”

Brazen Beau burst into the Brisbane Winter Carnival spotlight with an impressive win over Looks Like The Cat in the Group 2 $175,000 Bollinger Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben on May 10.

But a slow get away at his next start saw the Waller colt get back further in the field than expected and even though he was making up plenty of ground in the straight, was unable to run down the pacemaker Time For War in the Group 2 $250,000 Mitavite BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) at Doomben a fortnight ago.

Bookmakers expect Brazen Beau to be strong over the 1600m with the colt a clear cut $2.10 favourite for the J.J. Atkins at Ladbrokes.com.au with the Gai Waterhouse trained Almalad the nearest in the market order at $4.60.

Pressing with the blinkers on is marked at $8.50 just ahead of Time For War and Looks Like The Cat at $9.
