Godolphin import It’s Somewhat was able to win at his first Australian start by taking out the Group 3 $150,000 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Warwick Farm today.
The well supported It’s Somewhat ($7.60 into $5.50) was given a cosy run midfield by James McDonald before splitting the leaders to score a clear cut win over the fast finishing Rudy ($10) and Gypsy Diamond ($31) who also made up plenty of ground in the straight.
Race favourite Red Excitement ($3.70) was travelling sweetly behind the leaders by failed to run on in the straight when pulled to the middle of the track and wound up in eighth position.
Trainer John O’Shea will now head It’s Somewhat towards to the Group 1 $3m The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 4 then onto the Group 1 $4m Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 11.
“They sent him out to be a participant in the Queen Elizabeth. He has run third in the Coral-Eclipse,” O’Shea said.
“That would normally be good enough form to be competitive it a Queen Elizabeth.”
“He could run in the Doncaster, that will qualified now, a run in the Ryder.”
It’s Somewhat had good form in England and finished third in the 2014 Group 1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown.
It’s Somewhat’s next start is likely to be the Group 1 $1m George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 21.
