Ironstein has won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington today, which was the last Group race on action-packed Emirates Stakes Day.

The Zabeel gelding won the $250,000 race by two lengths ahead of Shootoff and Paddy O’ Reilly.

Bauer, who was likely have his final start in the race, held on to post a gallant fourth.

Jockey Brenton Avdulla was happy to have won a race on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

“We’ve been quite confident all week on him,” Avdulla said.

“We had a perfect run in transit and everything went to plan.

“He’s a very underrated horse this horse.

“Hopefully in 12 months’ time we’ll be here and be able to take out one of the features.”

Trainer Gerald Ryan highlighted Ironstein’s consistency.

“Out of his last 19 starts he’s finished out of the top 5 twice,” Ryan said.

“He’s done a sensational job.”

The six-year-old gelding has won seven of his 33 career starts, including the Group 3 Carlton Draught Tatt’s Cup at Eagle Farm in June this year.

Ironstein, who was purchased as a $250,000 yearling, has now earned close to $700,000 in prize money.
