Ironstein Likely To Attack Brisbane Cup

Ironstein is likely to target the Brisbane Cup

Gerald Ryan doesn’t have the biggest of teams at the Brisbane Winter Carnival this year but he could have one key horse heading north depending on what happens to the Rosehill track over the next few hours.

Ironstein has been nominated for the Winter Cup in Sydney tomorrow but Ryan is very cautious about sending his gelding out across a track that’s taken in so much water.

He has no doubts as to the horse’s fitness or prep and while he’d love to run him,  he doesn’t want to waste a start.

“He’s gone on terrific, my only doubt is about how heavy the track will be,” Ryan said.

“I won’t run him on a heavy track.”

He says if it manages to improve into the slow ranges he will consider it but if not he’s take the gamble on a trip north to Brisbane.

The target there would be the Brisbane Cup and it’s a race he could certainly be competitive in.

The Eagle Farm Cup tomorrow has just six horse sin the field so it’s very likely numbers won’t be overflowing for the Brisbane Cup either.

That has potentially enticed Ryan to send Ironstein up even more and the likelihood of the trip is increasing by the hour.

“At this stage there’s probably an 80% he won’t run (in the Winter Cup) and he’ll go to Brisbane,” he said.
