Instalment Takes MSS Security in Tight Finish

Mark Kavanagh trained Instalment finished strongly to just edge out the field in an extremely tight contest in the $100,000 Listed MSS Security Stakes (1100m) at Flemington today.

The pack was tightly bunched from 400 metres to go and it stayed that way as they came in to the final fifty metres of the 1100 metre sprint.

The race looked as if it could go any of four ways at the post, with Sharnee Rose (second), American Dream (third) and Glows also pushing for victory.

Instalment ($15.00) was not among the favourites but the experienced Michael Rodd rode the gelding well to just edge out his more fancied rivals.

Speaking on behalf of trainer Mark Kavanagh, stable foreman Merv Harvey said it was a pleasing result for a horse that has not experienced much recent good fortune.

“He hasn’t had much luck lately this horse, he was three wide the other day at Caulfield and went too hard the start before at Sandown, he’s not a bad horse,” he said.

“He was strong today and if he pulls up alright we might go to Bendigo (for the Bendigo Guineas) next week.”

The pre-race odds-on favourite Halle Rocks who started at a very short $2.25 never really looked a chance in the second race of the day at Flemington.

All the money came thick and fast for the previously unbeaten filly but as they came in to the final straight she could not find another gear and eventually finished a disappointing sixth.
