Jockey Kerrin McEvoy elected to take up the running on Hi World in the early stages of the Carbine Club Stakes and he kept the progressive three-year-old under a heavy hold in an attempt to set an even tempo.

Godolphin galloper Farolitos challenged Hi World at the 300 metre mark, but the Peter Moody-trained galloper was too strong from his rival in the final stages and hung on to record a maiden win at black-type level in the Carbine Club Stakes.

McEvoy said after the race that he did not plan to lead on Hi World in the Carbine Club Stakes, but he was happy to take up the running when none of his rivals showed any initiative and he was impressed with the way the High Chaparral colt toughed it out to the line.

“He has gone to another level today and he has gone to another level today,” McEvoy said.

“I thought he would be in a third or fourth spot today, but he pinged the lids and he actually raced a little bit fierce during the first part, but he is a determined little fellow and he will stay further than that if he relaxes.

“He doesn’t have to lead and he will probably be better with a sit, so he just has something to follow and he might relax better then.

“It is nice to get a win on the board early.”

Trainer Peter Moody was bullish about the chances of Hi World heading into the Carbine Club Stakes and he clearly pleased that the three-year-old was able to get the job done in the Group 3 event.

Moody said that he does not plan on giving Hi World a long autumn preparation, but he confirmed that the promising colt could contest the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) at Royal Randwick on April 18 or the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1800m) at the Gold Coast on April 25.

“It was well judged, he knew what he had under him and we were prepared to take a bit, but nothing took it up and he showed initiative,” Moody said.

“He is still a bit of a backward type, but you have the Packer Plate in a fortnight over 10 furlongs if we wanted to go down that path and there is even the Gold Coast in three weeks over nine furlongs.

“I don’t think it will be much of a deep preparation – maybe one more in him and then he goes away for the spring because he has a lot of growing and developing to do.”

Moody’s other galloper Inauguration hit the line strongly to finish third in the Carbine Club Stakes and he will head to Brisbane for a Queensland Derby campaign.
