He’s Remarkable is on track for the Doncaster Mile when he gained some compensation by taking out the HSG Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m) at Newcastle today.

The top Kiwi galloper was having his first run since controversially loosing the Group 1 $1m Carlton Draught Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot in Perth last November on protest to Luckygray and handled the 1400m of today’s $125,000 Group 3 with ease.

Sydney jockey Corey Brown was having his second ride on the Roger James trained four year old and produced a faultless ride to give He’s Remarkable ($4.60) a clear run to the line to score by three quarter of a length from topweight Dao Dao ($14) with Star of Octagonal ($7.50) a long neck away in third spot.

Favourite Under The Eiffel ($4) wound up in fourth spot after Blake Shinn moved to the lead on the home turn before getting run down in the drive to the line.

Brown gave He’s Remarkable a trouble free run and coming to the home turn started to improve slowly from the middle of the field to make his challenge at the 300m when it was clear he was going to rein in the leaders.

“I was really happy with the run we had. He positioned really well,” Brown said.

“He had to make his own luck coming into the straight, I had nothing towing me into the race.”

“I wouldn’t say he won as he liked but he had a big blow pulling up. I liked it.”

James will now continue on towards the Group 1 $2m Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 21 with the Pentire horse who has firmed into $17 for the Randwick feature after $21 was on offer prior today’s race.

His next run will be in the Group 1 $400,000 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill two weeks before the Doncaster with plenty of improvement to come according to James.

“He’ll harden up with that run,” James said following the win.

“I didn’t give him a trial coming into this so he’ll take plenty of improvement from the run.”
