Helmet is one of the top horses nominated for the Caulfield Guineas

Two-time Group 1 winner Helmet and scratched Golden Slipper hopeful Smart Missile headline the Caulfield Guineas nominations that were released today.

Helmet is the only Group 1 winner that was entered into the field, having won both the $500,000 Sires’ Produce Stakes and the $400,000 Champagne Stakes during his last preparation.

The talented three-year-old’s stablemates Sepoy and Benifica were not featured in the Cox Plate nominations as predicted.

Smart Missile will have the chance to make up for lost time in the Caulfield Guineas should he make the final field after a horror end to his last campaign.

The talented youngster was scratched from the Golden Slipper just seconds before the race after an incident occurred with the barrier stalls.

Smart Missile had been one of the major favourites to take out the event, which was ultimately won by Sepoy.

The horse will begin his Caulfield Guineas preparation with a trial later this week.

“I just want him to have a feel, I’m looking at trialling him on Friday week,” trainer Anthony Cummings said last Friday.

”He has come back in good order.”

Jockey Glenn Boss said that the team had recovered from the heart-braking scratching in the Golden Slipper and were now focusing on the campaign ahead.

“Things happen for a reason,” Boss said.

“He’s had a nice break now and I can’t wait to get back on him.”

John O’Shea’s Foxwedge and Bart Cummings’ Do You Think have also been nominated for the $1 million race.

This year’s race has attracted a large total of 278 nominations.
