Heathcote Duo Out To Upset Hay List In William Reid Stakes

Brisbane trainer Robert Heathcote will attempt to outdo Hay List with a two pronged attack in this Friday night’s Group 1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Both Buffering and Woorim will represent Heathcote in the race, where he will be looking to nab his second ever Group 1 race title.

Woorim gave him his first when winning the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield two starts back.

The six-year-old went on to finish a gallant fifth in the $1 million Newmarket Handicap last start.

Buffering will also be looking to make his mark after finishing second to Hay List by just a nose in the Newmarket last run.

The four-year-old is expected to set the pace for the William Reid Stakes this Friday and Heathcote hopes he will make it hard for Hay List to catch him.

“Hay List has the runs on the board but I can openly say that he won’t get a soft lead around the Valley in the William Reid,” Heathcote said.

“Buffering is a determined, dogged, little bugger and he will be jumping and running and if Hay List wants to take him on good luck because I have got one (Woorim) out the back that might be smoking home.”

Heathcote believes Buffering has gone unnoticed in the past due to his Brisbane base, however, feels he will make himself known in the William Reid.

“It is fair to say he got under the radar the last 12 or 18 months because of me as his trainer and being a visiting horse from Queensland,” Heathcote said.

“Even when he ran third to Black Caviar and Hay List in Lightning Stakes last month it was considered a good run and about his best.

“However I think the Newmarket where he put two lengths on a pretty good field and got nailed by the best male sprinter, stands him as a genuine, quality sprinter.”

Buffering will be looking for his first ever Group 1 title, after posting a variety of Group placings throughout his career.
