Havatryst In Need Of New George Moore Stakes Jockey

Trainer Barry Baldwin will need to find a new jockey for Havatryst in this weekend’s George Moore Stakes at Doomben.

Injured rider Larry Cassidy is booked to ride the four-year-old in the Group 3 race, however, is currently suffering from cartilage damage to his ribs.

Cassidy sustained the injury in a race fall at Doomben last Wednesday, which also involved apprentice Priscilla Schmidt.

Schmidt is expected to be on the sidelines for at least four months after breaking her leg.

It now appears certain that Cassidy will have to miss almost a month worth of riding due to his injury, which will leaven Havatryst riderless for Saturday’s race.

The next option is likely to be Scott Galloway.

“The owners want to wait until race morning to see who might become available if there’s scratchings but if not I favour putting Scott Galloway on,” Baldwin said.

Cassidy expressed his disappointment after realising he would miss the ride aboard Havatryst this weekend.

“It’s an even race and I think he’s a very good chance,” Cassidy said.

Despite the unfortunate jockey change, Baldwin is confident of Havatryst’s chances in the $200,000 race.

The trainer believes the constant rain in Brisbane, while not ideal, will suit the horse.

“He’s won on a slow and ran a great race on a very wet track in the Gold Coast Guineas so I don’t think he’ll have a problem on a heavy,” Baldwin said.

“I’d prefer him on top of the ground but he’s got the rails which is a big help.”

Havatryst, who was purchased for just $17,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, has won five of his 11 race starts and has earned more than $175,000 in prize money.

The Foreplay gelding is currently unbeaten this campaign, winning both his previous Saturday starts in Brisbane.

This will be Havatryst’s fourth attempt at a Group race, with his best result thus far being a fifth in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas earlier this year behind Military Rose.
