Talented Gai Waterhouse-trained two-year-old Harlem River has justified her resounding favouritism on the Gold Coast this afternoon; completing a polished performance for a comfortable win in the Listed 150 Years of Tattersall’s Stakes (1400m).

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Tommy Berry immediately led Harlem River to the fore of the field 13; setting a reasonable pace alongside Falloch away from the barriers and towards the turn.

Receiving an easy run in transit, Harlem River was offered a clear racing line upon arriving on the final straight and comfortably pulled clear; opening a gap of more than three lengths and hitting the line ahead of Star Of Night and Falloch.

Berry delivered a typically polished ride aboard Harlem River in the 150 Years of Tattersall’s Stakes and was quick to lay all the praise on the class of the Fastnet Rock filly in the success.

“She’s very easy to get along with and she gave me a very easy ride,” Berry said after crossing the line.

“We had a nice time mid-race and kicked well around the bend but she just got a little bit lost by herself out in front.

“When you bring these two-year-olds so far off the rail they can get lost but that’s why she was the short priced favourite. She’s trained by Gai and we all know how good she is with the two-year-olds.

“She’s not overly big and strong but she’s very well put together and she reminds me a little bit of Driefontein. Her next preparation she might strengthen up a little bit and go on to bigger and better things.”

Stable representative Mark Newnham was on hand to witness Harlem River’s impressive performance in the 150 Years of Tattersall’s Stakes and is confirmed she will now return to the paddock ahead of a 2015 Spring Carnival campaign.

“She was in control of the race the whole way,” Newnham said.

“Tommy summed it up pretty quickly when no one else wanted to lead and she was good enough to get there, relax and show a good turn of foot.

“She’s always shown good ability and she’s come on quickly, especially with the trip to Queensland.

“Really responsive filly and she didn’t everything that he wanted.”

Harlem River posted a maiden race win in the 150 Years of Tattersall’s Stakes, having finished second in each of the Listed Woodlands Stakes (1100m) and Listed Lancaster Stakes (1200m) since debuting in May.
