A patient ride by Kerrin McEvoy saw tough filly Guelph sweep past the leaders in the straight to take out the Group 1 $500,000 Inglis Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick today.

The Peter Snowden trained filly was able to turn the tables on Overreach who proved too nippy in winning the Golden Slipper last week with Guelph finishing in fourth spot.

Today Tommy Berry had Overreach out of the barriers first and set a solid tempo with McEvoy settling back in the field on Guelph.

Overreach was still travelling like a winner coming down the rise with Guelph having plenty of ground to make up, but once McEvoy pushed the button, the Exceed And Excel filly hit top gear and quickly hit the lead to score an impressive win.

The Anthony Cummings trained Scandiva ran up to her Magic Night Stakes win with another strong finish to knock Overreach out of second place with the Gai Waterhouse filly holding on for third.

Snowden will see how Guelph pulls up after her Group 1 win before deciding if she is to run in the Group 1 $400,000 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in two weeks.

“The team will decide and she will decide too,” Snowden said.

“She was impressive today and you would have to give it a lot of thought in backing up in a fortnight.”

“She’s got two weeks which is great, we’ll just have to see how she pulls up.”

Guelph seemed to appreciate the solid pace and the step up to the 1400m and the way she went to the line the 1600m of the Champagne Stakes doesn’t look a problem.

“She just relished the 1400m. Topping the rise I knew I was a chance and it was a great buzz,” McEvoy said after the win.

“She’s just doing it really well, such a big strong girl and the world’s her oyster as far as trip wise she can go out a bit further.”

Guelph received some support in the betting ring, starting the second favourite at $9.50 with runner-up Scandiva nearly causing a major upset at $71 with the $1.35 favourite Overreach fighting on to finish third.
