Group 1 Winners To Trial On Monday

A whole host of equine stars will be out in force at Rosehill on Monday morning with another exciting set of barrier trials set to take place.

The highlight will be the fourth trial of the day over 900 metres that will feature a field that would not look out of place in any major Group 1 race during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival.

Eight of the nine horses in the field have previously been successful at Group 1 level with Ichiara, who won the 2012 Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill, the only participant who is yet to win at the highest level of racing.

Chris Waller has a heavy presence in the star-studded trial with Foreteller, Hawkspur, Metal Bender, Sacred Falls and Shoot Out all set to compete.

Sacred Falls and Shoot Out will be making their second barrier trials appearance of their preparations, after having quiet trials behind Rebel Dane at Randwick last Friday, while Foreteller and Hawkspur will be making their first appearances at the track since their succesful 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival campaigns.

Foreteller was upset by stablemate Beaten Up, who is also set to compete in the trials on Monday, in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) but Hawkspur was able to pick up his first ever Group 1 victory in the Queensland Derby (2400m).

Arguably the most interesting runner is four-time Group 1 winner Metal Bender who has been kept out of racing due to injury since his victory in the 2012 George Ryder Stakes (1600m).

The rising eight-year-old is a proven weight-for-age performer who could be a spring carnival contender if he can return to his best form.

2013 Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis will trail after her disappointing performance in the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) while fellow Group 1 winning mare Streama will compete for the first time since her second place finish in the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara (1400m) in June.

Dual Group 1 winner Sincero rounds out the impressive field, in what will likely be his only barrier trial appearance before he defends his title in the recently upgraded Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m).

Other potential spring stars set to trial on Monday are classy colt Criterion, European import Beaten Up and 2013 Melbourne Cup contender Kelinni.
