Griffiths Hoping Angelic Light Can Repeat The Dose In Moir Stakes

Trainer Robbie Griffiths is hoping that Angelic Light can deliver him a maiden Group 1 victory by scoring another upset win over Lankan Rupee in the 2014 Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

Angelic Light recorded the biggest upset of the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival to date when she lowered the colours of Lankan Rupee in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley on September 6 and Griffiths told RSN this morning that he has been delighted with the way that the Holy Roman Emperor mare has come out of the run heading into the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) this weekend.

“She has come through fantastic,” Griffiths said.

“We were very fortunate that off a year of absence she has come up beautifully and ran fantastic when returning and reeled off some great sectionals.

“She backed that up with a big win last time and since then she has really trained on well.

“I am hoping that we can certainly run as good and hopefully repeat the performance if we are lucky enough to.”

Angelic Light took advantage of the fast early tempo in the McEwen Stakes to finish over the top of Lankan Rupee and Eloping and Griffiths said that he is hoping there will be plenty of early speed again in the Moir Stakes.

The 2014 Moir Stakes barrier draw will be released shortly and Griffiths is desperately hoping that Angelic Light will be able to draw towards the inside of the field in order to take a sit behind the leaders in the early stages of the race.

“It looks like there is going to be good pressure with Buffering and co. there and we are hoping so,” Griffiths said.

“She likes pressure and she can balance just behind the speed.

“It will be a great race and it is nice to be a part of the action.

“I think that if we can draw an inside gate or closer to the inside, so that we can stalk the speed and hopefully get a break like we did last time.

“That is a good recipe for her.”

Angelic Light is chasing her fourth win from six starts at Moonee Valley in the Moir Stakes after previously winning the 2012 Listed Crockett Stakes (1200m), 2013 Ascend Sales Trophies Plate (1200m) and McEwen Stakes at the unique track.
