Gregers on track for Thousand Guineas after Moonee Valley win

Trainer David Hayes has little doubt that Gregers will run out a strong 1600m in the Thousand Guineas after the filly scored as she liked in the $80,000 Mitchelton Wines Plate (1200m) at Moonee Valley today.

Winning rider Chad Schofield let the $1.35 favourite slide over from a wide alley to take up the lead and Gregers was never headed after that.

Gregers extended nicely in the straight to score by one and three quarter lengths from The Huntress and Pindan Pearl.

Hayes is heading towards the Group 1 $500,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 16 and believes she will handle the 1600m.

“In the work that I’ve seen her working behind horses she is very powerful at the end of her work. I think she’s a better swooper than a leader,” Hayes said.

“Hopefully she will just get better.”

Today’s win was Gregers second this time in after scoring over 1000m at Moonee Valley on August 3 and will now head towards the Group 2 $220,000 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on September 7.

Hayes has then pencilled in the Group 2 $175,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield on September 21 as her final lead up run before the Thousand Guineas.
