Grand Nirvana a chance for Melbourne in autumn

Perth trainer Fred Kersley has pencilled in a possible Melbourne campiagn for Saturday’s Group 3 A J Scahill Stakes (1400m) winner Grand Nirvana.

Kersley, the man who trained the great Northerly to a Caulfield Cup and two Cox Plate victories, says the ultra consistent son of Scenic is getting close to earning the right.

Grand Nirvana hasn’t missed a place in a race for the whole of 2011 having had ten starts and four wins.

Yesterday, with the assistance of Melbourne hoop Brad Rawilller, Grand Nirvana ended the year stylishly.

Rival jockey Paul Harvey had race favourite Waratah’s Secret in a clear lead but that horse was fired up at the 800m when Elusive Touch moved into a close second mid-race.

Waratah Secret’s over-raced down the side before Rawiller moved Grand Nirvana up at the point of the turn.

From there Grand Nirvana  outsprinted his rivals adding a another black-type victories to an impressive array.

“I think he was due,” Kersley said.

“His three runs this preparation have been good without winning.

“Heading over to Melbourne is not out of the question.”

Rawiller said he was confident at the turn.

“Small field with Harvey on the favourite, I thought it was always going to be a tactical race,” he said.

“I was really happy the way it worked out for us.

“We were able to be one out and one back with cover and from the 550m, when we trucked forward, we were not going to get beat.”

Grand Nirvana’s other black-type wins include the Listed – Supremacy 2YO, Fairetha Stakes, Bolton Sprint (twice) , Belmont Guineas.

As well as the Group 3 – Roma Cup (twice) and Belmont Sprint.

He was also placed in the 2011 Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes behind Ortensia on November 19

Waratah Secret pulled up lame in the off fore leg after the race.

It’s trainer David Harrison is considering a Brisbane Winter Carnival campaign with the five-year-old son of former Melbourne galloper Oratorio.
