Grafton Cup the Likely Target for In Masquerade

Having initially outlined a tilt at Saturday’s Listed Queensland Cup (3200m) on the Sunshine Coast as the next point of call for the talented stayer, trainer Desleigh Forster believes In Masquerade may be far-better suited to the conditions of next week’s Listed Grafton Cup (2350m).

In Masquerade has found great form over five competitive starts for Forster this year and has won two of his three most recent starts, including a comfortable one length success in the Bank Of Queensland BM85 (2200m) at Doomben last weekend.

Having confirmed regular hoop Robbie Fradd will take the ride on the Pentire mare wherever her next start may figure, Forster told AAP she is leaning towards the 2015 Grafton Cup, as the two miles of Saturday’s Queensland Cup may figure as a little too great a task for the four-year-old.

“I have my doubts she could run 3200 metres around the Sunshine Coast,” Forster said.

“She can make a long run in her races and that should suit her at Grafton.

“Obviously any black type would further improve her stud value.

“Robbie was unlucky on her at Ipswich at her previous start but made up for it at Doomben with a smart ride.”

In Masquerade began her racing career under the guidance of Peter Moody partway through the 2013 racing calendar, but undoubtedly stamped her claims as one to watch through a 2014 Adelaide Autumn Carnival highlighted by second place finished in the Listed Lealia Stakes (1600m) and Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m), and a credible fifth in the featured Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m).

Unable to make much of an impact through the Melbourne and Sydney Spring Carnivals, the mare out of Cuphill ran on for a competitive fourth in her first start for Forster on April 15th; progressing to second in the Melbourne Cup Packages Handicap (1800m) and success in the Gatton Motel BM75 (2000m) on May 21st.

The 2015 Grafton Cup final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, July 6th.
