Good Doomben track for capacity 2017 Queensland Oaks field

The capacity sixteen horse field for the Group 1 $500,000 Treasury Brisbane Queensland Oaks (2200m) will race on a good track at Doomben on Saturday.

The distance for the Queensland Oaks was reduced from 2400m to 2200m when Racing Queensland transferred the entire race day to Doomben following widespread condemnation of the substandard Eagle Farm track on Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup Day last Saturday.

Nineteen fillies accepted for the Queensland Oaks with sixteen making up the main field plus three emergencies, Lipstick Lover (barrier 17), Namib (18) and Miabla (4).

The Darren Weir trained Kenedna will carry the number one saddlecloth and has drawn barrier eleven with regular rider John Allen in the saddle again after the pair combined for three wins and a second from their last four starts.

Kenedna was going for a hat trick of wins when second to Queensland Oaks rival Egg Tart in the Group 1 $500,000 Schweppes Oaks (registered as Australasian Oaks) (2000m) on May 6 but was quick to bounce back into the winner’s circle with a tough win over Oklahoma Girl in the Group 2 $175,000 The Magic Millions Roses (2000m) at Doomben on May 20.

Champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller will saddle up almost half the Queensland Oaks field after accepting with all seven fillies that were in contention.

The Waller trained Egg Tart has drawn barrier ten with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle again and will start the favourite after winning the Schweppes Oaks in Adelaide while stablemate Dawn Wall will have to negotiate a wide barrier after drawing sixteen with Hugh Bowman to ride again after steering her to victory in the Listed $125,000 Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) at the Gold Coast on May 6.

Oklahoma Girl is also well in contention after drawing barrier seven with Blake Shinn taking over from English jockey James Doyle who was on board when the filly ran second to Kenedna in The Roses.

Waller’s other Queensland Oaks runners are Invincibella (Larry Cassidy, barrier 6), Cross Stitch (Tim Clark, 2), Baysa (Leith Innes, 1) and Kirini (Ben Melham, 13).

The Stuart Webb trained Ana Royale has drawn worse than midfield at barrier twelve with Melbourne jockey Mark Zahra retaining the ride after the pair combined for a last start win in the Group 3 $175,000 SA Fillies Classic (2500m) at Morphettville on May 20.

Queenslanders will be looking to the Scott Morrisey trained Perilous Love to fly the flag for the locals and has also drawn around the middle of the pack at barrier nine.

Brisbane’s premiership winning jockey Jeff Lloyd takes the ride, replacing the suspended Opie Bosson who was aboard the Gold Coast filly last start for an eye catching third behind Kenedna and Oklahoma Girl in The Roses.

The Darren Beadman trained Pygmy will carry the Godolphin royal blue colours in the Queensland Oaks and will jump from the outside barrier in the final sixteen horse field with Tommy Berry in the saddle again.
