Golden Slipper Runners To Meet In San Domenico

Karuta Queen

Karuta Queen (pcitured) could take on Foxwedge in the San Domenico Stakes

The talented two-year-old Foxwedge will make his first appearance on Tuesday since finishing seventh in the $3.5 million Golden Slipper in April.

Foxwedge is due to compete in the 2YO Colts and Geldings barrier trial over 740 metres at Randwick Racecourse.

Most of his rivals are yet to race.

The Fastnet Rock colt is making his way towards the Group 1 Golden Rose at Rosehill Gardens on September 14.

Before taking part in his Group 1 aim, the rising three-year-old will take part in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes at the same track on August 13 against likely competitor Karuta Queen.

After finishing a disappointing tenth in the Golden Slipper, Karuta Queen came back from a spell to win her barrier trail by an impressive eight lengths at Canberra earlier this month.

Karuta Queen won the $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions earlier this year, along with the $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions last December.

Jockey Adrian Layt, who rode the two-year-old to her trail win, said that while she needs some more fitness, Karuta Queen will be a likely San Domenico competitor.

“I think she definitely needed the run, she was getting a bit tired towards the post,” Adrian Layt.

“She is a bit fat at present but is on track for the San Domenico.

“We will trial her again at Canberra in two weeks’ time.”

Trainer Neville Layt was confident Karuta Queen would feature in some of the top spring races.

“We will see how she goes but we will look at group races in Melbourne and Sydney for her,” he said.

“Anything between 1000 and 1100 metres they will know she is there.”
