South-east Queensland tends to have a predictable formula when it comes to the weather over the summer months.

It’s stinking hot during the day and then the storms roll in during the late afternoon and early evening and drop a heap of rain in a short period of time.

It’s a scenario trainer Liam Birchley was counting on this week as he prays for a wet Gold Coast track come Saturday.

Birchley’s prayers seem unlikely to be answered though with the stinking hot days a reality but the rain nowhere to be seen.

His horse is Snipzu, a filly that won by seven lengths at Eagle Farm back in October on heavy ground.

She wasn’t so successful on top of the ground last time out when comfortably beaten home by Dreifontein and Sizzling in the BJ McLachlan Stakes at Doomben.

The 1200m also loomed as a potential issue following that performance as she languished over six lengths off the winner.

Birchley is confident they’ve rectified a couple of the issue holding her back that day but admits the rain is what they really need.

“A blood count we had done after the McLachlan showed her red cell reading was down a bit. We’ve worked to correct that. She also gave her hamstring a little twinge and we’ve corrected that,” Birchley said.

“So I think she will be better this week. But I’d love some rain.”

The current forecast see’s a cool change coming in tomorrow which will give the south east a reprieve from the mid 30’s temps experienced all week.

The rain is still absent from the radar though and even if a possible shower eventuates before the Magic Millions it wouldn’t be enough to make a difference to the firm Gold Coast surface.
