Glencadam Gold takes out Newcastle Cup

Imported English stayer Glencadam Gold continued his march towards the major Spring Cups when he took out the Group 3 $200,000 Tooheys New Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) at Newcastle today.

Nash Rawiller let Glencadam Gold stroll to the front and after being joined briefly at the 1000m by roughy French Gift, the odds on favourite was untroubled to chalk up Gai Waterhouse’s fifth Newcastle Cup.

The Waterhouse stable is hoping for a penalty to help the gelding secure a run in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and will now head towards the Group 1 $400,000 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick on October 6.

Rawiller had a glowing report for Glencadam Gold after his all the way win and is expecting the import to keep on improving after today’s easy win.

“I ran them along at a genuine clip the whole way and let this horse really get into his own rhythm, made it a staying test. This bloke’s all class, isn’t he,” Rawiller said.

“He’s been well performed over in England and Gai has put the finishing touches on him. He’ll just keep taking the next step this horse. He was bit lost today at the furlong, started seeing things that weren’t there, he gives you a very good feel of a good horse.”

In the end Glencadam Gold ($1.30 fav) scored a comfortable win over Peal Of Bells ($13) who ran home for Corey Brown with Gazza Guru ($16) putting in his usual honest effort to finish third for Brenton Avdulla.

Stable foreman Mark Newnham agreed with Rawiller, saying that Glencadam Gold keeps on improving and a Cups mission is on the cards.

“He hasn’t had much exposure to our racing but what he’s shown so far is pretty good,” Newnham said.

“Gai really wants to get him qualified for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups so the best way to do that is keep winning these races and hopefully just keep pushing him up the handicap a little bit.”

Today’s win was Rawiller’s second win in the Newcastle feature and maintained Glencadam Gold’s unbeaten Australian record after winning a Canterbury midweek race before taking out the Listed $100,000 Motor Traders Association Premier’s Cup (1800m) at Rosehill on September 1.
