Trainer Michael Moroney is asking people not to discount Glass Harmonium for tomorrow’s Melbourne Cup, despite him being untested over more than 2,400 metres.

Glass Harmonium won the 2,000 metre Mackinnon Stakes last Saturday and the 3,200 metres of the Cup will be a big jump up for the five-year-old.

With the exception of a tenth placing in the Cox Plate, Glass Harmonium has not finished outside the first four during his entire spring preparation.

While he is unsure if the horse will stay, Moroney had always had a Melbourne Cup start in the back of his mind.

“We made each payment but we really never had the race in our sights,” Moroney said.

“But once the Cox Plate went to custard it was back on the radar as long as he performed well in the Mackinnon.

“I’m 50-50 over whether he can stay or not. I think he may be too brilliant but he’s such a good horse he deserves his chance.

“If he stays, he wins the race and his best chance is this year before weight gets him.

“He’s well-weighted this time, he’s probably the best weighted horse in the race.”

Glass Harmonium will be ridden by jockey Lisa Cropp after they were told their original choice, Damien Oliver, was pre-booked aboard Manighar.

“The owners were always keen to have a big name rider on the horse and Damien was the choice,” Moroney said.

“Lisa knows the horse so I am very happy to have her there now that he is not available,” Moroney said.

The Verglas entire has drawn barrier 23 for the race, however, Moroney is unfazed by the wide draw.

“He was always probably going to lead and the barrier makes sure we do,” he said.

“He is tough, he loves the Flemington track, he just has to run the 3200 metres.”

Glass Harmonium, who was purchased from the United Kingdom earlier this year, has won five of his 21 race starts and earned close to $1.1 million in prize money.
