Geegees Blackflash is staking his claims for a trip to the mainland later in the year as the Tasmanian runner continues his domination of the local fields.

He’ll go into the Group 3 Hobart Cup as a big favourite and if successful there connections will surely consider a crack at the richer staying events during the spring carnivals.

The gelding won in a resounding fashion on Sunday easing his way through the field from the 600m mark before blitzing the straight in quick fashion.

He put paid to Norsqui with a couple of hundred metres to go and the six length final margin shows he’s certainly up to metropolitan class in Sydney or Melbourne given Norsqui himself has run in that grade.

It was another four lengths back to Catwen Boy in third and shows just how good this horse is.

He managed to win the Newmarket Handicap first up over a trip of just 1200m.

After that he won at weight for age level over 1400m and then again in the Kevin Sharkie Stakes over a mile in Hobart.

There could even be more improvement to come given he’s had only a handful of runs since a bleeding attack forced him out after his win in the 2010 Tasmanian Derby.

The horse is owned by Paul Geard who said they’ll tackle the Hobart Cup first and then decide on future plans.

“The horse is doing everything we had hoped he would this time in and it is a credit to his trainer John Luttrell and his team at Brighton,” Geard said.

“To win the Newmarket was a bonus for us but it just shows the horse’s versatility.”

“We’ll go the Hobart Cup now with a bit more confidence but we are by no means counting our chickens before they’re hatched.”
