Fry Heads North To Avoid Spring Carnival Drought

Apprentice jockey Jarrod Fry will begin his Brisbane riding campaign at Doomben Racecourse tomorrow.

The talented Melbourne jockey was transferred from the stables of trainer John Moloney to Eagle Farm trainer David Murphy for three months.

The transfer was made due to the scarcity of rides available to apprentice jockeys during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

“My manager Rob Tweedie suggested I try Brisbane because there wasn’t going to be a lot of opportunities for an apprentice to get rides during the spring,” Fry said.

Fry is hoping to gain some momentum aboard the talented Bruce Hill-trained Startsmeup tomorrow after waiting out a two-week suspension.

“I rode a winner for David but then was suspended for a fortnight,” Fry said.

“When you ride a winner it puts your name out there but then a suspension takes away any momentum.

“(Today at) Ipswich is my first day back from the suspension, so it would be nice to get a quick winner.”

Startsmeup will run in the Ownit Homes Handicap tomorrow.

“Startsmeup ran really well first up and with only 53.5kg he definitely has a great chance,” Fry said.

Hill believes this will be Startsmeup’s last Queensland win before heading south for the spring carnivals.

“This will probably be his last start before we head south. I’m keen to go to Sydney first but a lot depends on the weather,” Hill said.

“This will be a good test for him. I think it is a fairly strong sprint with Tierqualo and Elusive Port both in great form.”

The trainer was initially planning to run the three-year-old against his own age in the Montrose Access Handicap, but felt he had been allocated too high a weight.

“I thought he had too much weight in the three-year-old race,” he said.

“I’d booked Jarrod for that race and retained him when I changed the plan.”
