Three-year-old Frankel has beaten rival Canford Cliffs in superior style in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood in England yesterday.

The unbeaten colt has now won all of his eight race starts and has accumulated the equivalent of more than $A 1.35 million in prize money.

Trainer Sir Henry Cecil believes that Frankel is the best horse he has ever had in his well-known stables.

“I think he’s the best I’ve trained, the best I’ve seen,” said Cecil.

“I did think he could win very easily but I thought I’d let the horse do the talking. It’s been a marvellous day.”

The talented trainer has now won the Sussex Stakes on six occasions.

One of those times was with the impressive Wollow, a horse that Cecil had previously named as the best horse he had trained.

Jockey Tom Queally had the pleasure of riding Frankel to his eighth undisputed victory.

Queally has been hoping to ride Frankel behind a leader.

“Plan A would have been having him in behind getting him relaxed,” he said.

“We had to resort to different things and I just had to use my initiative and thankfully it worked out.”

The jockey was full of praise for the champion colt.

“I’ve said it before – he’s a freak,” Queally said.

“He’s got that turbo. He was amazing and I’m just very fortunate to be playing a small part in it.

“He made the others look ordinary and they are very good horses.”

Frankel’s owner, Prince Khalid Abdullah, also believes the horse is the most talented he has had the pleasure of owning.

“I think he is the best I’ve ever had including Dancing Brave,” Abdullah said.

“This is one of the best days. I am lucky to have a horse like him.”

Before the race, many doubted Frankel’s ability against rival Canford Cliffs.

Canford Cliff’s trainer, Richard Hannon, believes the downhill slope of the Goodwood track led to his horse’s failure.

“I don’t think Goodwood is his track. He doesn’t like going downhill,” Hannon said.

“I wouldn’t be worried on a decent track to have another go. We’ll have to go home and rethink it, but I’m sure it’s the racecourse.

“We scoped him and blood tested him and everything is perfect inside.

“I know one horse had to win and one had to lose, but we’ll have to have another go at him.

“Either Frankel is just unbeatable or we should have been closer.”

Canford Cliff’s jockey, Richard Hughes, did not want to take anything away from Frankel’s winning run.

“I don’t want to make any excuses. Frankel is a brilliant horse and he was the best horse on the day,” Hughes said.

“My lad didn’t move great and he didn’t really stretch and hung badly.

“But I don’t want to stand here making excuses as Frankel deserves all the credit.”

Cecil has now outlined a program for Frankel that will include the Juddmonte International at York, Champion Stakes at Newmarket, Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Prix Jacques le Marois in France.

This campaign is unlikely to eventuate in a clash between Frankel and dominant Australian export So You Think.
