Foxplay heads the betting for the Thousand Guineas

Smart filly Foxplay might have played second fiddle to high profile stablemate Winx at track work on Wednesday morning, but she is all the rage in the betting for the Group 1 $500,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Foxplay with Melbourne jockey Craig Newitt in the saddle went out on the track with Winx with High Bowman on top and the three year old filly stayed about six lengths behind the Cox Plate favourite in their 1000m gallop.

Bowman will hop back on Foxplay on Saturday after steering her to two Spring Carnival wins in Sydney in the Group 2 $175,000 Fitzy & Wippa’s Fast & Furious Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on September 3 and in the Group 2 $175,000 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on 17.

Foxplay heads the market order for the Thousand Guineas at $3.20 with Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s Flight Stakes winner Global Glamour at $4.40.

On the third line of betting at $9.50 is the Lindsay Park trained Harlow Gold who is taking on the top fillies at Group 1 level after winning a 1600m three year old Handicap at Caulfield on September 17.

The Chris Waller trained Foxplay showed her liking for the a rain affected track with her win on a heavy 8 in the Furious Stakes but then showed that she was just as good on top of the ground taking out the Tea Rose Stakes at her next start on a Good 4.

The Caulfield track is currently rated a Good 3 on Thursday afternoon and Waller’s stable representative Charles Duckworth is expecting another top showing from the Foxwedge filly in the Thousand Guineas.

“We thought that she was a bit of a wet tracker but she seems adaptable and has done in on every track,” Duckworth said.

“She has had a wonderful prep. She is unbeaten in her two starts.”

“She has drawn well with a jockey that knows her well. She is certainly in there with a chance.”

Foxplay has come from midfield or worse at her last two starts to claim the major prize and Bowman will probably settled her in her customary position from barrier five in the fifteen horse field.

Global Glamour was able to set the pace before holding on to claim a notable victory in the Group 1 $500,000 Sydney Airport Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick last Saturday and new jockey Kerrin McEvoy could go forward again from barrier eight.

Market order for the Thousand Guineas at Ladbrokes.com.au: $3.20 Foxplay, $4.40 Global Glamour, $9.50 Harlow Gold, $10 Whispering Brook, $12 Missrock, $14 La Luna Rossa, $17 Leotie, $18 Legless Veuve, $19 Samara Dancer, I Am A Star, $34 Sebring Dream, $41 Sword Of Light, $61 Smart Amelia, $101 Fromparis Withlove, $126, Peeking Duck.
