Foreteller wins the David Jones Cup

Sydney galloper Foreteller has earned another shot at a Group 1 race after a last to first win in the Group 3 David Jones Cup(2000m) at Caulfield today.

The Chris Waller trained gelding did much wrong but prevailed in a thrilling finish that saw five horses across the track just 50m from the winning post.

Jockey Corey Brown dropped Foreteller to the tail early in the race, a consequence of his wide draw.

Platinum Passion led early and slowed the pace.

He kicked strongly at the home turn but drifted off the fence giving Extra Zero a chance to makes it run.

Midnight Martini, who settled off the pace in fourth spot,  was blocked early in the straight but was extricated by Michael Rodd and chased.

Booming. who had settled midfield, joined in while Foreteller, widest of the five, finished best.

Two lengths covered those five at the post with Foreteller beating Extra Zero by a length and Midnight Martini a nose away third.

“I would have loved to have landed him two pairs closer because on paper I knew there was a little bit of speed but they would anchor up when they got there,” Brown said.

“I was little bit concerned mid-race when they backed off but I got him into the three wide line and he got a nice trail into it.

“As soon as we hit the bend he lost everything, he actually lost a couple of lengths but once he balanced up he showed he was a real tradesman, he is tough and he showed it today.”
Foreteller who ran on well when seventh in the Group 1 Epsom Hcp last start will race again in the elite company next start.

“He gets 2000m and he wins in Melbourne.,” Waller said.

“Where we head from here I’m not sure but a race like the Mackinnon (Group 1) will allow us to be part of the carnival.

“He has proven he can race well in this class, so we will take the next step and run in a race like that.”
The L K S Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) will be run at Flemington on October 29.
