Flight Of Pegasus will step up in distance for the Listed Dulcify Handicap

Trainer Scott Aspery remains confident that his star three-year-old Flight Of Pegasus can withstand the entire 1,900 metres of the Listed Dulcify Handicapat Rosehill tomorrow.

Flight Of Pegasus will be attempting the 1,900 metre distance for the first time, despite only having covered a maximum of 1,400 metres in the past.

Aspery was happy with Flight Of The Pegasus’ run in the $1 million Golden Rose last start where he finished fifth.

“I think he went terrific, he got some pretty heavy interference at the start,” Aspery said.

“He ended up being a lot closer (to the front) than we had planned.

“He probably should have run third…but that’s racing.”

The trainer was always planning to step Flight Of Pegasus up in distance in time for the Group 1 Victoria Derby on October 29.

“We toyed with the idea of running him in the Stan Fox (1,500m) this Saturday or the Dulcify,” he said.

“(But) we were always planning on stepping up in some distance.

“He’ll run over 1900m no problem.

“He’s just a very fit horse and is very clean winded.”

Aspery will leave jockey Chris Munce to decide where in the field to settle tomorrow.

“That will be up to Chris Munce who will be on him again,” Aspery said.

“The horse is pretty adaptable.”

Flight Of Pegasus’ main opposition will be John Thompson’s Boys On Tour.

“He ran in the Run To The Rose and we beat him comfortably,” Aspery said.

Aspery, who was originally a banker and mortgage consultant, is grateful for having the opportunity to train such a promising young horse so early in his training career.

“He has been a horse that’s kind of paved the way for my career by getting my name out there,” he said.
