Patanick Farms scored a double whammy when first starter Ferment won the Laura Butcher  Memorial (2yo, 1100m) at Caulfield today.

Ferment is by Patinack’s first season sire Husson (by Hussonet) who stands for $22,000.

The former Argentenian champion two-year-old is throwing early types and Ferment is keeping the banner afloat despite wayward tendencies.

Heavyweight jockey Jamie Mott was fasting all week to ride Ferment at 56kg and the effort proved fruitful.

The John Thompson-trained chestnut settled just behind the pace dictated by three horses Jacaranda Avenue, Starchine and Catalonia.

The trio set a slowish speed with Danny Nikolic aboard Starchine happy to shade the other two, albeit when three wide.

Catalonia dropped back and Jacaranda Avenue and Starchine went to a clear lead on straightening.

Both were under seige and weakened from the 150m as Ferment hit the lead.

Catalonia found another gear in the final stages and came again with Henia –  both were flat footed when the sprint came on but finished strongly.

There were excuses for Timely Truce who was blocked in the straight when trying to make a run between Catalonia and Starchine.

Patinack paid $60,000 for Ferment at the Startheden Stud dispersal sale at the Gold Coast in May 2010.

Ferment is a three quarter brother to multiple city winner Atomic Huss from an unraced Tabasco Cat daughter of Luthier’s Launch.

“We have had quite a number of two-year-old winners this season so things are good,” said Glen Thompson, Melbourne foreman for Patinack.

“They (Hussons) are early two-year-old types that have shown a lot of ability and it is starting to show on the racetrack.

“He is a professional when he is running but needs a few manners lessons off the track.”
