The rest of Australian Guineas winner Ferlax’s Autumn campaign is in doubt after receiving a battering in the Group 1 $550,000 Hyland Race Colours Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

Jockey Brett Prebble reported to trainer Jim Conlan to forget the run after Ferlax returned to the enclosure worse for wear after being galloped on after receiving influence on two separate occasions.

“Brett Prebble got off him and told us to completely forget the run,” Conlan said.

“He said the horse was knocked around badly twice, was galloped-on, got on his wrong leg turning for home and was never ever comfortable in the run.”

Conlan will wait and see how the injury responds to treatment before confirming future Autumn plans but hasn’t completely ruled out a start in the Group 1 $500,000 M. J. Bale Rosehill Guineas (2000m) at Rosehill on March 30.

“Look, the injury is superficial and the horse will be OK,” Conlan said.

“He’s home now and I don’t know if he’ll race on this prep.”

“I just want to monitor how he is in the next week to 10 days and gauge where we go and what we do.”

Conlan is starting to consider Warwick Farm somewhat as a graveyard for his horses after visiting the Sydney track on four occasions and walking away disappointed every time.

“I know it’s a small test case but it’s 100% failure, so maybe it’s the track, maybe it’s a coincidence, I don’t know,” Conlan added.

Ferlax rose to prominence with an unexpected win in the Group 1 $500,000 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 2 and Conlan went to Warwick Farm full of confidence that the Pentire three year old would add another Group 1 victroy to his record.

But those thoughts were dashed early when Ferlax suffered interference at the 1400m and again passing the 1000m mark.

And Prebble also reported that Ferlax got onto his wrong leg on the home turn and struggled down the straight to finish just over eight lengths from the winner, Kiwi three year old It’s A Dundeel.

It’s A Dundeel record his second Group 1 win in the Randwick Guineas and Cambridge trainer Murray Baker will push onto the Rosehill Guineas with the Group 1 $1.5m David Jones Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on April 13 firmly in his sights for his stable star.
