Tough Goulburn trained stayer Faust led from start to finish to take out the Group 3 $125,000 Channel 7 Premier’s Cup (2020m) at Doomben today.

Faust was well in the market at $5.50 and once he left the barriers cleanly, winning jockey James McDonald had no hesitation in letting the five year straight to the front and had the fence by the time the small field reached the turn of out the straight the first time.

Winning trainer Kurt Goldman said that he had left the tactics up to McDonald and was very happy with the result.

“I left all the instructions to James,” Goldman said.

“I just let him do what he wanted out of the gates. Obviously the small field was always going to be a tricky tempo, and he made the right decision.”

McDonlad had control of the race a long way from home and Faust had plenty in reserve when the challenges came in the straight and was able to hold off Baligari ($5) and Jetset Lad ($17) in the run to the line.

Third placegetter Jetset Lad ran home strongly after he was the last to leave the barriers while favourite Hvasstan ($3.90) tailed off the straight to finish a long last.

Goldman said that he will now take Faust back to Goulburn and after giving him a week in the paddock would prepare to bring back to Queensland to run in the Group 3 $200,000 Carlton Draught Tattersall’s Cup (2400m) at the Gold Coast on June 20.

“He is very tough,” Goldman said.

“He will probably go home. Monday night he will go back to Goulburn, go in the paddock for a week and then he will probably come back up in three weeks time, I think it is the Tattersall’s Cup at the Gold Coast.”
