Fat Al has continued his unbeaten preparation by winning the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate at Royal Randwick today.

The Al Maher gelding won the race by more than a length ahead of Ambidexter, who ran home for second placing.

Rekindled Alliance produced the run of the race to come from near last to finish third in the Frank Packer Plate, making more than five lengths on the remainder of the field.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse was thrilled with Fat Al’s performance after the race.

“The way he stepped up in distance and in class (was great).

“He took control of the race.

“(He’s a) beautiful son of Al Maher.”

Waterhouse confirmed that Fat Al would make the journey up north to Brisbane for the Winter Racing Carnival.

“He’s already bought his air ticket on his frequent flyer points,” she said.

“He’s all ready to rock and roll.”

However, jockey Nash Rawiller had a different idea, preferring to save Fat Al for a Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival campaign.

“He’s a pretty exciting horse I think,” Rawiller said.

“He’s a very tough customer.

“To be quite honest I think he’s a bit better than Brisbane.”

The three-year-old gelding has won both the $40,000 Albury Guineas and the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes so far this campaign.

Purchased for just $27,000 from the 2010 Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Fat Al is now owned by a large syndicate of owners who are reaping the rewards of his impressive rise up the ranks.

Fat Al has now won five of his seven race starts and has earned more than $215,000 in prize money.
