Trainer Noel Mayfield-Smith is willing to give Famous Seamus another attempt over the mile again in Friday’s Listed $200,000 Scone Cup at Scone.

Famous Seamus is best known as a sprinter and reached the highest levels when he won the 2014 Group 1 $400,000 Bundaberg Distilling Co. BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben.

But Mayfield-Smith is happy to give the veteran another chance to prove himself over 1600m even though he faded in the straight after racing on the pace to finish ninth to Fabrizio in the Group 3 $200,000 Livamol Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) at Hawkesbury on April 29.

“He’s still circulating at the same speed as he was when he was four and five. He hasn’t lost anything,” Mayfield-Smith told AAP.

“It’s surprising I suppose, that’s just how he is.

“I put trackings on him every time he gallops and they’re exactly the same as they were two years ago.”

Mayfield-Smith believes the eight year old still has plenty of racing left in his old legs and has no thoughts of any retirement plans.

“As long as he’s competitive he’ll last. At the moment everything’s fine with him,” Mayfield-Smith said.

Famous Seamus has been given 57.5kg in the Scone Cup and looks likely to clash again with the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained front running Fabrizio.

Fabrizio who has been allocated equal top weight of 59kg alongside of Mighty Lucky after leading all of the way with Jason Collett in the saddle to win the Hawkesbury Gold Cup.

Famous Seamus was still competing at Group 1 level during the 2017 Sydney Autumn Carnival but could only manage to beat two home when eighth to Tivaci in the $600,000 Schweppes All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 15.

The Elusive City gelding has been in the winner’s stall on twelve occasions from fifty-seven starts with his latest victory being in the Listed $125,000 Ladies Day Cup (1400m) at Hawkesbury in November last year.
