The Lindsay Park Team is quietly confident that their tough galloper Extra Zero can claim his first Group 1 win when he takes on a smart field in the Group 1 $1m Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot in Perth on Saturday.

Extra Zero has come close on two occasions when as a three year old ran second to Monaco Consul in the 2009 Group 1 $1.5m AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington.

Then as an eight year old he was beaten a nose by stablemate Spillway in the Group 1 $1m Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington during this year’s Melbourne Autumn Carnival.

Now a nine year old, Extra Zero is still racing in the top company and showed three runs back that he is still competitive with a one and a quarter lengths fifth to Preferment in the Group 1 $500,000 Yellowglen Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 4.

At his latest Spring Carnival run Extra Zero finished seventh to Gailo Chop in the Group 1 $1m Longines Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 31.

Kingston Town Classic favourite Magic Artist was fourth in the Mackinnon Stakes with Extra Zero finishing only two and three quarter lengths behind the German galloper.

Racing manager for the Lindsay Park training team of David Hayes and Tom Dabernig, Ryan Moore, has reported that Extra Zero has settled in well in Perth and is working in great style for work rider Tara Clegg.

“Tara tells me she is rapt at how he is going,” Moore told The West Australian.

“Peter Knuckey worked a horse in a gallop alongside him last week. He was so impressed by the horse’s work his racing manager Kyle Nowland rang me for the ride.

“Magic Artist gave terrific runs in the Mackinnon and the Emirates Stakes a week apart.

“He ran fourth in the Mackinnon and our horse ran seventh, not far away.

“Extra Zero’s run to finish fifth to Preferment in the Turnbull was excellent and he did run a close second in this year’s Australian Cup. I don’t usually have a bet, but I think I will here at those odds.”

Extra Zero was out of luck at the barrier draw and came up with the visitor’s draw when the fifteen marble rolled out giving new rider Mark Zahra plenty of work to do in the early and middle stages.

Zahra has had one ride on the nine year old back in 2010 for an eighth in the Listed $200,000 The Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington during the Spring Carnival and replaces Michael Walker who is out of action having a hip replacement.

Extra Zero is at the healthy odds of $19 for the Kingston Town Classic at Ladbrokes.com.au who have Magic Artist marked as the $3.80 favourite.

The undefeated three year old filly Perfect Reflection is the second pick at $4.20 ahead of local mares Delicacy at $5.50 and Real Love at $8.

Kingston Town Classic market order at Ladbrokes.com.au: $3.80 Magic Artist (barrier 1), $4.20 Perfect Reflection (12), $5.50 Delicacy (16), $8 Real Love (7), $9.50 Black Heart Bart (3), $13 Neverland (10), $19 Extra Zero (15), Man Booker (9), $21 Balmont Girl (2), Blackwood (14), $26 Hazzabeel (5), $34 London Line (6), $81 Bass Strait (8), Tower Of Lonhro (4), $101 Dark Musket (13), $151 Woodsville (11).
