Exospheric Ready for Return in Peter Young Stakes

Trainer Lee Freedman has confirmed that Caulfield Cup placegetter Exospheric will return to the races in Saturday’s 2017 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield Racecourse, with a view towards contesting the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) second-up.

Exospheric began his racing career under the guidance of notable British trainer Sir Michael Stoute during the early stages of 2015, but was purchased as transferred to the care of the Freedmans partway through August of 2016, with a view towards contesting the Melbourne Cup.

Freedman told AAP that the Beat Hollow entire has relished his time in the paddock and while not adding a lot to his overall physique, is far-more accustomed to the conditions of Australia leading into the 2017 Peter Young Stakes and his Autumn Carnival campaign.

“He’s settled in much better,” Freedman said.

“I don’t see much physical difference. He’s probably carrying a tad more weight.

“He came as a lightly framed horse straight off a long flight, so he was always going to be a bit light-framed in the spring.

“But he’s looking better. He’s got a good stiff test against Jameka in the Peter Young.”

Debuting for sixth in a Newmarket minor over a mile in April of 2015, Exospheric quickly found blistering condition and won three of his next four starts, before ending his maiden season a credible third behind Scottish and Mutakayyef in the Listed Doonside Cup (2011m).

Resuming in 2016 for a smart win in the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes (2414m), Exospheric failed to fire in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes (2414m), but responded well for third in the Group 2 Princess Of Wales’s Stakes (2414m) and fifth in the Group 1 Juddmonte International (2092m) at his final two starts in Britain.

Rated only an outside chance in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) upon debuting to Australia in spring, the entire out of Bright And Clear worked home well to finish third behind Jameka and Scottish, and was last seen running on for a credible eighth in the Melbourne Cup (3200m), having received no luck in transit.

Lee and Anthony Freedman have also included Tom Melbourne in 2017 Peter Young Stakes nominations.

Exospheric is currently available at early 2017 Peter Young Stakes odds of $10 with Ladbrokes Australia.
