Eurozone required surgery after he was galloped on during the running of the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 29 and connections elected to send the son of Northern Meteor to stud rather than continue his racing career.
Newgate Farm, who also house promising stallions Foxwedge and Sizzling, will stand Eurozone for a competitive price of $12,500 and managing director Henry Field is confident that the talented colt will be highly sought after during the upcoming breeding season.
“It is a privilege to be standing this very exciting son of Northern Meteor on behalf and in conjunction with Dato Tan Chin Nam, Michael Alexeeff and Tunku Ahmad Yahaya,” Field said in a statement.
“In a short but highly successful racing career he showed himself to be one of the top colts of his generation, and as a son of the much-missed Northern Meteor, we feel he represents incredible value at a fee of $12,500 +GST and expect him to be exceptionally popular with breeders.”
Eurozone made his racing debut in June of last year with a maiden win at Canterbury and made it to wins from two starts a fortnight later at Rosehill Gardens before scoring a maiden black type win in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) at Royal Randwick on August 10.
The Northern Meteor colt performed fairly in both the Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1200m) and the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens and returned to the winners circle with a narrow win in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) at the same venue on September 28.
Eurozone made his weight-for-age debut in the Group 1 Orr Stakes (1400m) at the start of his autumn preparation this year and was only narrowly denied a win at the highest level of racing by Moment Of Change.
He dropped back to take on his own age group in both the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 1 and the Group 1 Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 15, finishing fourth and third respectively, before failing to beat home a single runner in the George Ryder Stakes.
Eurozone finished his racing career with four wins from ten race starts and total prizemoney of $446,080.
