Eloping’s Trainers Leaning Towards Typhoon Tracy Stakes

Three-year-old filly Eloping was one of 20 sprinters nominated for the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) this morning however her trainers are leaning towards the Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night instead.

The Oakleigh Plate is one of three Group One races running at Caulfield on Saturday and while the possibility of becoming a winner at the highest level of racing is alluring to trainers Peter Morgan & Craig Widdison, they believe Eloping would be a better fit against her own sex and age group the night before.

“I think we’re leaning towards the Typhoon Tracy but we’ll just work that out over the next couple of days,” Widdison told Racing Victoria.

“She worked in company this morning and she worked well, they didn’t go flat-out but she did it pretty easily.

“We can’t find anything wrong with her, her action seems good and her attitude at home hasn’t changed so we’re just hoping she’s still interested in racing.”

Eloping has won six of her 14 career starts, including the Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) and Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) during the spring, both of which were won by over one and a half lengths.

The filly then stepped up to Group One racing for the first time since the Golden Slipper in the spring, running against a top field of 16 sprinters in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m). She led the outside group and acted like the buffer on the outside rail but did her usual tough run to be near the placings in sixth place, five and a half lengths off winner Brazen Beau. She ended the spring with a runner-up finish in the Group 3 Gucci Stakes (1100m) on November 6, just half a length behind Onemorezeta.

Eloping resumed in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on February 14 after three months in the spelling paddock, however she weakened right out of the running and finished end of the field in seventh place.

If Eloping runs in the 2015 Typhoon Tracy Stakes, she will carry the top weight of 58.5kg, which is six kilograms more than she ran with in the Rubiton Stakes.
