Electric Fusion has earned himself a start in the Group 1 Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm in two weeks’ time.

The three-year-old proved to trainer Robert Smerdon and jockey Dwayne Dunn that he could travel in Queensland’s clockwise direction after working in reverse at Sandown earlier today.

“He galloped at Sandown this morning in the reverse direction and Dwayne Dunn said he handled it without a problem and went into every turn spot on,” Smerdon said.

Electric Fusion has won one of his 11 race starts and has earned more than $100,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.

The Fastnet Rock gelding placed second in the $35,000 Browns Sawdust & Shavings Handicap last start, however, Smerdon felt the run was full of merit and warranted a Queensland Derby run.

“He had a big weight, a wide gate and it was on a heavy track so we thought it was a good enough effort to take him up to Brisbane for the Derby,” he said.

“He probably looked as though he didn’t stay when he ran in the Victoria Derby in the Spring, but that was at the end of his first preparation and he’s a bit more seasoned now.”

Electric Fusion ran fifth behind Fiveandahalfstars in the $1.5 million Victoria Derby behind Fiveandahalfstar during last year’s spring racing carnival.

While he has not won a race since, his best result has been a third placing in the Listed Adelaide Guineas at Morphettville earlier this month.

Electric Fusion, who is currently paying odds of $31 to win the Queensland Derby, has had all 11 of his career runs in Victoria.

However, the galloper will be swapping the southern cold for the warmer Queensland winter when he runs in Brisbane for the first time in the $500,000 Derby.
