The seven-year-old was undergoing routine trackwork when he smashed a sesamoid bone at trainer David Hayes’ Euroa facility.

Hayes described Eagle Falls as a “terrific old horse” and said it was a sad day for all involved with the galloper.

A son of Hussonet, the gelding’s major career highlight was victory at Group 1 level in the 2011 Oakleigh Plate and he also placed in both the 2010 Newmarket Handicap and Manikato Stakes.

Other career milestones included winning the 2009 Group 2 Salinger Stakes and the Group 3 Rubiton Stakes in 2012.

He also embarked on an overseas trip where he performed respectably to finish fifth in both the Golden Shaheen in Dubai and the Krisflyer International Sprint in 2010.

Eagle Falls’ overall career record ended with eight wins and three minor placings from 37 starts and a prize pool of more than $1 million.
